Premature ejaculation is a condition where semen leave the body sooner than wanted during sex.¹
How fast is too fast? International guidelines define premature ejaculation as regularly ejaculating within 1 minute after penetration.²
When Do You Need To Get Help?
Experiencing premature ejaculation once in a while is normal. However, you should seek help from healthcare professionals when you experience the following:¹
- Always or nearly always ejaculate within 1 to 3 minutes of penetration
- Are not able to delay ejaculation during sex all or nearly all the time
- Feel distressed and frustrated, and tend to avoid sexual intimacy as a result
Causes
There are many reasons for the occurrence of premature ejaculation including both psychological and biological causes:¹
- Poor body image
- Worrying about premature ejaculation
- Erectile Dysfunction
- Anxiety
- Relationship problems
Premature Ejaculation VS Erectile Dysfunction
A lot of men believe both premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction are the same problem. In fact, they are not. They are treated differently as well. However, the inability to achieve or sustain an erection might lead to premature ejaculation. Fear of losing an erection might cause you to hurry through sex.³
Premature Ejaculation Home Remedies
These are a few simple methods that you can practice yourself to improve the condition:³
1. Stop & Restart
When you feel you are about to ejaculate, stop for about 30 seconds or until the urge to ejaculate has passed.
2. The Squeeze
An alternative to the previous method, you may squeeze your penis when you are about to ejaculate until you lose the erection.
3.Strengthen Your Muscle
Pelvic floor muscle is involved in ejaculation. Strengthening the muscle may help. Follow these few simple steps:
- Find the muscle involved: The muscle men use to stop urine midstream is the target muscle
- Exercise: Contract the muscle for 3 seconds then relax for 3 seconds
- Repeat: Do this 10 times, repeat 3 times a day
4. Wear A Condom
Wearing a condom reduces sensitivity. This delays ejaculation.
5.Masturbation?
Masturbating a few hours before sexual intercourse may help with premature ejaculation.
Treatment
Many antidepressant medications have the side effect of delaying ejaculation.4 Side effects are not always bad! In this case, the side effect of antidepressant medications is being used to treat premature ejaculation. In fact, there is one medication from a class of antidepressants, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI), is designed specifically to treat premature ejaculation.4
Anaesthetic cream can also be used to delay ejaculation.4 Reducing sensitivity is the key here.
Remember, premature ejaculation can be treated. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist to know more on premature ejaculation!
