Management

Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)4

• One of the most common skin conditions in children. 

• Symptoms often include itching, redness, dryness, and inflammation, often on the face, elbows, and knees; severe cases may cause oozing or thickening.

• Mostly triggered by genetic factors, environmental allergens, or a combination of both, often associated with family history of allergies, asthma or hay fever.

• While there is no cure for eczema, various treatments can help manage symptoms and prevent flare-ups. 

• i) Moisturizers: Regular application of unscented moisturizers to keep skin hydrated and restore skin barrier.

• ii) Topical corticosteroids: Prescribed to reduce inflammation.
•  
• iii) Antihistamines: To relieve itchiness.
•  
• iv) Identify and Avoid triggers: Identifying and avoiding allergens or irritants such as pollen, pet dander, harsh soap that cause flare-ups.

Diaper Rash5 

• Characterized by red rashes or patches around the diaper area, potentially severe with blisters or large red areas.

• Develops due to prolonged exposure to feces, urine, and friction from the diaper materials. 

• Treating diaper rash involves soothing the irritated skin and preventing further irritation. 

i) Frequent diaper changes: Change diapers promptly; avoid wipes with alcohol or fragrances. 

ii) Barrier cream: Applying barrier creams or ointments containing zinc oxide or petroleum jelly during every diaper change. 

iii) Allowing airflow: Let your baby go without a diaper whenever possible for a short period to let the skin breathe. 

Heat Rash (Miliaria/ Prickly heat) 6

• Characterized by small, itchy red bumps on the necks, shoulders and chest; severe cases may be pus-filled.

• Often occurs in hot and humid climates. 

• Main goal of treatment is to reduce sweating and soothe the skin to prevent further irritation.

• i) Keeping the skin cool and dry: Use fans or air conditioning; Take cool shower

• ii) Wearing loose clothing: Choose light, breathable fabrics such as cotton. Avoid tight clothing
•  
• iii) Apply calamine lotion or mild corticosteroid cream to soothe itching. 

Ringworm (tinea)7

• Is a common fungal infection that spreads through direct contact with an infected person, animal, or contaminated objects such as towel or clothing.

• Symptoms can include circular, red, scaly patches with a raised border and clear center; may cause itchiness and discomfort

• Treatment aims to eradicate the fungal infection and relieve symptoms.

i) Antifungal cream : Use antifungal cream such as clotrimazole for mild cases; Oral antifungal medication may be needed for severe cases. 

ii) Maintain good hygiene : Keeping the affected area clean and dry & avoiding sharing personal items to prevent the spreading.
