Myo-Inositol: Another Nutrient to Support Diabetes Management
Find out how myo-inositol support your diabetes management care plan.
What is Myo-inositol?
Inositol is a carbohydrate, produced by the body and found in some foods. Some consider inositol as a vitamin that belongs to the family of B-vitamins. Inositol is not considered an essential nutrient since the body can produce it. It is estimated that the liver and kidneys produce up to 4g of inositol in a day. Ninety-nine percent of inositol in the body is in the form of myo-inositol1.Intake of myo-inositol through diet is estimated to be up to 1g per day2. Myo-inositol is commonly found in fresh fruits, vegetables, beans and grains. Fresh vegetables and fruits contain more myo-inositol than frozen or canned products3.
How Much Myo-inositol Is In The Common Food We Consume3?
Benefits of Myo-inositol
Scientific studies to date have shown that myo-inositol can mimic the actions of insulin activity and may increase insulin sensitivity, leading to better glucose control. Myo-inositol has been shown to lower fasting blood glucose and HbA1c. Inositol has been used as a supplement in treating Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), metabolic syndrome, and gestational diabetes (GDM)4. There is growing evidence for inositol in improving glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes4.
Consult your healthcare professionals on how inositol supplementation may support you in your diabetes management plan, together with diet control and medical intervention.
