Supplements for Joint Pain
Joint pain is a common problem that troubles many elderly people. Complaints of burning, throbbing, or “grating” sensation is common for patients with joint pain.1 However, do not assume that joint pain is a problem that only plagues elderly people. More and more young people are facing this problem.
What Are The Common Causes of Joint Pain?
Osteoarthritis: A form of arthritis (inflammation of the joint) due to the wear and tear of the joint cartilage (cartilage forms the protective cushion between bones)1
Rheumatoid Arthritis: A form of arthritis due to autoimmune disorder. This occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your own body tissue.1
Gout: A condition where uric acid crystals accumulate in joints causing pain and inflammation.1
Anti-inflammatory Supplements for Joint Pain
1. Turmeric or Curcumin
Many may ask, what is the difference between turmeric and curcumin? Turmeric contains curcumin which is a chemical compound that blocks inflammatory enzymes. Many studies show that turmeric or curcumin is effective in reducing joint pain.2
2. Ginger Extract
Studies have suggested that ginger extract may help those with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Ginger has good anti-inflammatory properties.2
3. Fish Oil
The Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil have a good anti-inflammatory effect as well. Omega-3 supplements may help to reduce the reliance on painkillers. Before you buy any fish oil supplements, make sure you check the EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) content as these 2 specific Omega-3 fatty acids are responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity.
4. Boswellia Serrata
Boswellia Serrata, also known as Indian Frankincense, contains Boswellic acid that has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.2
While most joint pain conditions are due to inflammation and anti-inflammatory supplements may help, you should not be your own doctor. Remember to ask your pharmacist or doctor before deciding to take any supplements.
