Why Isn’t My Medication Working?

Ever wondered why some pills are contained in amber colored bottles?
Nitroglycerin tablets also known as ‘Under-the-Tongue’ pill is one of those. Nitroglycerin tablets are kept in such a way due to light sensitivity. Nitroglycerin or Glyceryl Trinitrate is a medication used in Angina Pectoris (chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart). This life saving medication is sensitive to temperature, light and moisture. Nitroglycerin tablets must be kept in the original container to be protected against moisture and light. The tablets need be kept below 30°C. Any remaining tablets must be discarded after 8 weeks of opening of bottle.
Nitroglycerin is one of the classic examples of medications that require specific storage condition. A number of medications require refrigeration to maintain stability and potency. These include:
- Insulin Injections
- Certain antibiotic eye drops (chloramphenicol)
- Certain suppositories
- Compounded antibiotic suspensions (amoxicillin)
Why is it so important to keep your medications in the right condition?
1.Effectiveness
Many medication break down under undesirable environments. Sensitive medications such as Thyroid Hormone must be kept at the right condition all the time.
2.Sterility
Keeping medication in their original packaging keeps bacteria and other harmful microorganisms at bay.
3.Maintaining Physical Form
Many suppositories must be kept refrigerated. Warm temperature may melt suppositories.
Tips on Medication Storage:
- Always refer to the packaging for more information on the storage condition.
- Never keep your medications in your car!
- If possible, keep your medication in the original container (bottle/foil).
- Ask your pharmacist if you have any doubt on the storage condition.
